南都此前报道，1月1日，有博主发布视频称，一名男子自称中国留美博士，已流浪纽约街头16年，引发热议。1月5日，复旦大学校友会纽约分会方面告诉南都记者，目前可确认此人为复旦校友，已有当地校友自发组织并提供帮助。
1月6日，复旦大学校友会纽约分会联络人向南都记者表示，孙先生的同班同学、数位校友和同乡已与其见面，并已经请他搬进临时住处。有关捐款问题，校友志愿者团队正在认真讨论，待专业人士研究出合适方案后将告知大家。
1月7日，孙先生家乡江苏省江阴市民求助中心工作人员告诉南都记者，校友会已在帮助孙先生补办证件，家乡有关部门正在跟进补办情况。
